New Commanders QB reveals cool logic behind his historic decision

Marcus Mariota is trying to win the Washington Commanders’ starting quarterback job, and he will be doing it with an unusual number.

Mariota will be the first quarterback in NFL history to wear No. 0, and the choice is not an accident. The veteran quarterback said he chose the number as a motivational tactic to prove his doubters wrong.

“Zero is something for me that’s just a reminder,” Mariota told Zach Selby of the team’s official website. “I’m in year 10. People don’t think I can do it anymore. It’s just kind of a reminder everyday of ‘nobody really gives you a chance.’ And it’s cool to be able to remind yourself.”

Mariota has preferred to wear No. 8 throughout his career, but Brian Robinson wears it for the Commanders, hence the change.

The Commanders drafted Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick, and the team would probably prefer that the rookie sees the field as much as possible. Mariota may have an uphill battle to win and keep the starting job, but if the number helps him do it, so be it.
