New Jets Free Agent Fires off Warning to Teammates Ahead of Camp

A New York Jets free agent is heading into training camp with some serious swagger.

Rashad Weaver, New York Jets

Rashad Weaver told Jets team reporter Caroline Hendershot that he is heading into 2025 with a different mentality.

“For me right now, it’s gonna be to continue to attack. Bring the fight to that O-Lineman. They gotta block me, I don’t gotta block them, kind of that mindset,” Weaver explained.

Weaver, 27, joined the Jets this offseason on a one-year $1.17 million contract.

“Just getting into that groove, that flow state,” Weaver said. “Like I said, ups and downs, and I’m always transparent. Last year wasn’t what I liked personally so sometimes you gotta get back in that groove and that is kind of what I’ve used OTAs for and what I’m excited for camp for so when you get in October and September you just kind of flowing, it’s natural and you can just rely on all those reps that you put on in the bank. You don’t have to think when you’re out there, you can just go out there and make plays.”

Loving this energy!

Rashad Weaver told @cghendy that his job is to carve out his own role w/ the #Jets in camp. Nothing will be given, everything will be earned.

Weaver Is the Not so International Man of Mystery for the Jets

The former Pittsburgh product was a curious signing by the Jets in free agency.

Five days after the new league year kicked off in March, the Jets signed Weaver. In 2024, he was dumped ahead of final roster cutdowns on August 28 by the Tennessee Titans. A few days later, he joined the Houston Texans’ practice squad and was with the team until November 20 before getting cut again.

After a multi-week adventure as a free agent in the middle of the season, Weaver joined the Los Angeles Rams practice squad on December 17 and finished the year with them.

A guy who was barely hanging on in the NFL last year was one of the first free agent signings by this new Jets’ regime? Odd.

Weaver has been in the NFL for four years. In three of those seasons, Weaver has failed to record a single sack. However, in 2022 Weaver popped with 5.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits.

This new Jets coaching staff believes they can get that version of Weaver in 2025.

Weaver Is Entering Camp With a Humble Attitude

The Jets didn’t add a ton of defensive ends this offseason. That leaves a great opportunity for someone to seize the day and to claim a role.

Weaver is someone who has turned heads this offseason with his disruption and playmaking ability. Despite that momentum, he is keeping a humble mindset.

“I’m in a place right now where I’m just earning my role. You know, work every day, kind of head down, 3% a day, and when you look up in a couple of months, you’re where you want to be. It’ll all pay off,” Weaver explained.

There is a clear path for Weaver to be the third or fourth defensive end in this Jets’ D-Line rotation behind Will McDonald, Jermaine Johnson, and Micheal Clemons.
