Not only do the Detroit Lions have to worry about trying to build a competitive roster in an NFC that is getting more brutal with each passing year, but Dan Campbell needs to replace a half-dozen coaches, including both of his prized coordinators.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who helped the Lions create the most exhilarating offensive circus in the league, left to join the division rival Chicago Bears and work with Caleb Williams. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who earned high marks for his leadership skills, is now in charge of his old team in the New York Jets.
After Johnson poached wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El, Scottie Montgomery was promoted to assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. Tashard Choice, who spent the last six seasons as a college running backs coach at Georgia Tech and Texas, is now running things in the Detroit backfield.
Choice has received some strong testimonials from former players. Ex-Longhorns running back Jaydon Blue, speaking at the NFL Combine, was extremely complementary of Choice, calling him a "genius when it comes to the running back position" and talking up his leadership skills off the field.
Hires like that will prove that Campbell isn't just a Ben Johnson merchant, as he can replace many of his top names who get hired away.
New Lions coach Tashard Choice called "genius" at NFL Combine
Fans may remember Choice from his days as a player, as the former undrafted free agent ran for 1,579 yards and 10 touchdowns across five seasons spent primarily with the Cowboys and Bills.
Choice, who coached Pro Bowl standout Bijan Robinson, may have been so appealing to the Lions due to his connection with Jahmyr Gibbs during his days at Georgia Tech. If Choice helped Gibbs level up in college, imagine what he can do now that they're back together in the pros.
For as much hype as the Lions' passing game received, this team was built on their 1-2 punch of Gibbs and David Montgomery in the backfield. Replacing Johnson is going to be hard, but Choice may be able to keep the ground game at peak efficiency while new offensive coordinator John Morton works on keeping Jared Goff in rhythm.
The true test of Campbell's ability to put a staff together will be proving he didn't just get lucky with the Johnson and Glenn hires. The strong shows of support for Choice could be a sign that Campbell has a perfect plan in place.
