New Lions pass rusher drops all-time quote to Dan Campbell after selection

The Detroit Lions didn't address the pass rusher position on the first two days of the 2025 NFL draft, but on day three, that changed in a big way.

In the sixth-round with pick No. 196, the Lions nabbed Ahmed Hassanein from Boise State. He is the first player from Egypt to be drafted into the NFL, and brings with him a hard working mindset as well as some impressive production.

Hassanein is also the kind of culture fit the Lions will appreciate. Immediately after he was drafted, he hopped on a call with Dan Campbell and the franchise, and was captured delivering an impassioned message to his new coach with family cheers in the background.

"I would die for you, coach. I just wanted you to believe in me. I just wanted you to believe in me, coach. I would die on that field for you. I promise I would."

It's been said the Lions and Dan Campbell have a type, and Hassanein certainly represents that type with the epic quote. It's safe to say Campbell has never had a player vow to directly lay down his life for him on the football field before, but it certainly shows the toughness, grit and devotion that Hassanein will bring with him to Detroit.

Hassanein's case isn't simply a good story. He'll have a chance to compete and earn a spot on the roster, perhaps even working his way into a major contributor in short order. Many analysts believe he represents one of the most underrated talents on the defensive side of the ball.

Analyst Eric Galko likes the fit of Hassanein in Detroit given his physical tools as well as his mindset, something which was on full display at the Shrine Bowl, where he stood out impressively for multiple different reasons.

The Lions needed to add depth at defensive end specifically, and Hassanein represents their lone foray into the edge class this year. Hassanein certainly has some intriguing production given 119 tackles, 24 sacks and 35 tackles for-loss in his college career after just starting in football six years ago.

Hassanein could certainly work his way into the starting lineup eventually, given the tangibles and intangibles he brings to the table. Anyone who is willing to lay down their life to work hard after simply being given a chance isn't to be wagered against.
