New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore has made some waves on social media in recent days due to his comments during the NFL owners meetings. He discussed the future of Chris Olave, Spencer Rattler's development, and the tush push - among other topics.
Kellen Moore advocates for tush push
To nobody's surprise, the Saints' new head coach is a supporter of the tush push remaining viable in the NFL. He does not plan to help with the protest/outlawing of the unique play.
“I’m comfortable with the play. There’s no injury data. I don’t see any issues. … Other teams have tried it and haven’t had as much success. … I got Nick (Sirrianni).”
-- Kellen Moore on the tush push
This should not be a shocker.
Moore found plenty of success using the tush push play with Jalen Hurts last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was hoping that Moore and other former Philly assistants would be pro-tush push, and Moore has checked that box.
Spoke to Nick Sirianni today on the tush-push vote. With a grin, he said: "We’ll see how it goes. All I will say about it is (Jonathan) Gannon, (Shane) Steichen and (Kellen) Moore better vote for it. They are in the (head coach) position right now because of that play. So all three, I better have those three votes right there and the #Eagles’ vote. I at least know we have four.” -- Mike Garafolo
The offensive success in Philly had a lot more to do with other pieces of the unit than that one play, though. Their offensive line has been arguably the best in the entire NFL over the past few seasons. They've got the best running back in football.
Oh, plus, add in two dynamic WR options in Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown. There were a lot of reasons that the Eagles succeeded on offense with Kellen Moore at the helm last season, but the tush push definitely had an impact on him as well.
The "legality" of the tush push won't be decided as soon as some expected. The banning of the play has been tabled until further discussions by owners in May.
We will see how that situation shakes out. As of now, the pro-tush push group seems to have the upper hand when it comes to banishing the play. Only time will tell, though. We also know where Kellen Moore's allegiances lie on that concept.
