New Orleans Still Has a Place in Eric Allen’s Heart

As Eric Allen addressed the crowd in Canton on Sunday, he took a moment to reflect on a career that spanned 14 seasons in the NFL across three different franchises. Although many football fans will remember his time in Philadelphia and Oakland, Allen made sure to acknowledge the New Orleans Saints and the significant role the organization played in his journey.

Eric joined the Saints in 1995, adding valuable veteran leadership to a franchise undergoing change. After seven impressive seasons with the Eagles, he quickly became a key defensive player in New Orleans. Over three seasons with the Saints, he had five interceptions.

During his enshrinement speech, Allen expressed his gratitude to the owners who provided him with that opportunity: “I want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Benson for the opportunity to join the Saints and play in the great city of New Orleans,” Allen said. “I truly appreciate you guys giving me the opportunity to wear that jersey.”

Even though his time in New Orleans didn’t lead to a postseason appearance, Allen’s impact was felt both in the locker room and on the field. His presence was instrumental in guiding younger players, and his playmaking skills continued to shine. Saints fans remember Allen as a true professional who embraced the city and its culture.

Allen’s induction is a reminder that Hall of Fame careers are not solely defined by championships. His time with the Saints acted as a bridge between two iconic phases of his career, and his words in Canton conveyed gratitude for every chapter along the way.
