A nine-time NBA All-Star like Damian Lillard typically would be a heavily sought-after free agent. Lillard’s options, however, reportedly are not as plentiful given his situation.
Lillard ruptured his Achilles on April 27, and is likely
to miss most, if not all, the 2025-26 campaign. Teams are operating with some pause given the injury and ensuing recovery for Lillard, according to the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.
“According to NBA sources, (Jayson) Tatum has been active in recruiting Lillard to Boston, and the market for the point guard is limited because his injury will prevent him from likely playing most of next season,” Washburn wrote.
Less bidders undoubtedly is a good thing for the Celtics, who reportedly have expressed interest in Lillard. Lillard, who is set to enter his age-35 season, reportedly is interested in Boston, as well.
Having a five-time All-NBA honoree like Tatum make the free-agent pitch only adds to the advantage. Especially since Tatum, who’s recovering from his own ruptured Achilles, would work closely with Lillard during the rehab and recovery portion of their seasons.
