While the New York Yankees have a well-built reputation for swinging important deals at the MLB trade deadline, a new report suggests this could be a very quiet July when it comes to notable additions.
Despite not having ace Gerrit Cole, being without Giancarlo Stanton for much of the season, and underwhelming performances from Anthony Volpe and third base, the Yankees still are within striking distance of owning the best record in the American League. They can get back to the World Series this year if they make some impactful moves before July’s trade deadline.
However, this week, The Athletic Yankees insider Chris Kirschner has some bad news for New York fans hoping general manager Brian Cashman will make some key trades before July 31st.
“Brace yourself for the possibility that this trade deadline might be a dud. There are too many teams still in the mix. Maybe that changes in a month, but in the expanded playoffs era, we’ve seen organizations would rather hold or buy than sell.”

While Cashman doesn’t usually make blockbuster trades during the season, he always makes at least one or two trades that bolster weak spots on the roster. Often, it deals with improving the bullpen. However, many teams are looking for bullpen help this summer, including the New York Mets.
Making matters worse, the clear-cut sellers this summer, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, and the Athletics, don’t have many good players they are willing to part with. And the ones they do have, there will be many teams competing to acquire them.
