The Minnesota Vikings were busy this offseason. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and the team's front office worked hard to bring players to the team to give them the best chance to win games in 2025.
Big free agent signings like Will Fries, Ryan Kelly, Jonathan Allen, and Javon Hargrave signaled a goal to beef up the trenches. Re-signing cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. and safety Theo Jackson keeps some consistency in the defensive secondary. But there's one particular signing that could be called the steal of the summer.
Among the big-money signings that went down this offseason was a signing by the Minnesota Vikings that could provide some significant help to the defense. Isaiah Rodgers' two-year deal, worth a little over $11 million, makes him an inexpensive option but doesn't fully represent his value on the field.
In a recent article published by Cody Benjamin on CBS Sports, seven players who will make noise at minicamp were identified, and among those included was Minnesota's new defensive back.
"Rodgers, a modest free agent addition from the Super Bowl champion Eagles, has the upside to man multiple spots for Brian Flores. A fluid athlete who once looked like the NFL's next best return man, he could quickly pin down a starting corner job in Minnesota."Cody Benjamin on CBS Sports
Considering the value that Minnesota got in his contract, getting a big contribution out of Rodgers in 2025 would be a huge value. Benjamin is right that his athleticism and position versatility will be valued in Brian Flores' defense and he will have every opportunity to showcase those skills during minicamp and training camp.
At 27-years old, Rodgers is still very young. A sixth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, he sat out the entire 2023 NFL season for violating the league's policy on gambling and returned to spend 2024 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Rodgers started three games at cornerback for the 2024 Super Bowl Champions and made some big plays against the Rams in the Conference Championship game and against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Time will tell if the Minnesota Vikings got the steal of the summer by signing defensive back Isaiah Rodgers. However, he has the potential to surpass expectations and give fans worried about cornerback depth the ability to relax a little.
