Newly-drafted San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Mykel Williams has a high motor and tremendous ability to stuff the run and sack the quarterback. That is evident just by watching his tape.
However, the intangibles, or things that are not visible on tape, are what makes Williams special.
While being interviewed on the Danza Project, Williams was faced with a hypothetical. He was asked what he wanted more. ... His choices were a $200 million contract or a $60 million contract with a guaranteed Super Bowl ring.
Williams gave an answer for the ages and goes to the character that general manager John Lynch looks for when drafting a player.
Williams said he would rather live comfortably with the smaller deal and have the Super Bowl ring, which has eluded so many great players throughout their careers.
“I ain’t gonna lie to you, bro. That’s legacy. A ring will decide whether you go to the Hall of Fame or not," Williams said. "Sometimes that’s what it comes down to… Winning a Super Bowl is your legacy.
"So yeah I’ll go with the Super Bowl.”
A cynic could argue that the rookie might want to revisit that answer in four years when he comes up for extension. However, for now, one has to love his answer. The kid wants to be great and he wants to bring a Super Bowl championship back to the Bay Area.
Maybe Williams gave a very politically-correct answer to the question. Time will tell how well this answer holds up. But ideally? He develops in a win-win way that allows him and the Niners to have ... both.
