Willington Previlon, the newest member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will wear No. 72 after being claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons.
The uniform number for the newest member of the Pittsburgh Steelers has been revealed, as recently added defensive tackle Willington Previlon will wear No. 72, according to NFL Jersey Numbers.
The Steelers claimed Previlon off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons on June 21, after the end of the team’s spring practice window, so his first practice in his new jersey number will come on the first day of training camp at St. Vincent College later this month.
Previlon, 27, has spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and Falcons since signing with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers in 2020, but has never played in a regular season NFL game.
Previlon wore No. 71 in Atlanta, 93 with Tampa Bay, 94 in Dallas, and 99 with the Green Bay Packers. In Pittsburgh, all of those were taken before Previlon arrived.
The last Steelers player to be assigned No. 72 was offensive lineman Kellen Diesch, who was signed to the practice squad last August and waived on May 13. Diesch did not play in any regular-season games for the Steelers.
Last summer, defensive tackle Manny Jones wore No. 72 during training camp. Jones was waived after training camp and was not retained. The last Steelers player to wear No. 72 in a game was tackle Trent Scott in 2022. Zach Banner wore it over 22 games from 2019-21. Center Cody Wallace (2013-15), tackle Jonathan Scott (2010-11), guard Darnell Stapleton (2008) and tackle Barrett Brooks (2004-05) have all worn it for short stints recently.
The last regular starter to wear No. 72 for the Steelers was offensive tackle Wayne Gandy, who donned the digits for 63 games over four seasons as the starting left tackle from 1999-2003.
The most famous Steelers No. 72 of all time is guard Gerry “Moon” Mullins, who wore it while winning four Super Bowls in the 1970s. The team’s fourth-round pick in the 1971 NFL Draft out of USC, Mullins became a regular starter in his second year and remained one, shifting from tackle to guard and back twice over his nine-year career with the Steelers. Mullins played in 124 regular-season games and made 87 starts, and he also appeared in another 18 playoff games, including four Super Bowls.
