The Dallas Cowboys are entering a rough patch. With Dak Prescott being ruled out for the season due to a hamstring injury, Dallas' hopes are dwindling. They started Cooper Rush in their last game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now that Prescott was officially ruled out for the rest of the year, the Cowboys need to answer one question. Should they continue starting Rush or should they move to Trey Lance? Both quarterbacks saw playing time in the loss to the Eagles.
An NFL source shared their thoughts with Josina Anderson on what the Cowboys should do. The source said Dallas should consider playing Lance more to see what they have with the young quarterback.
"I feel like we need to evaluate Trey Lance more and see if he can be one of those quarterbacks who can thrive in a different environment,' the source said. The source cited examples like Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Geno Smith as recent success stories.
Lance was a former first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. However, injuries and the emergence of Brock Purdy led the team to trade Lance to the Cowboys. He started the season as Dallas' QB3, behind Prescott and Rush.
Rush, on the other hand, has been the Cowboys' backup for quite a while. Rush already started a few games in 2022 when Prescott missed time due to an injury. Dallas already is familiar with Rush's abilities as a quarterback.
With the Cowboys at 3-6 and the trade deadline long gone, the argument is that Dallas should use the rest of the season to evaluate their young prospects. Lance's reputation might not be stellar, but he was still a top-3 prospect. Perhaps under a new system with some new weapons, Lance could thrive in Dallas.
The Cowboys are set to face another good team in the Houston Texans next week. Time will tell whether Dallas will keep starting Rush for the Texas showdown or go with the young Lance.
