NFL insider links 49ers to former Pro Bowl WR still looking for a team

The San Francisco 49ers' offseason, so far, sort of feels like a mass exodus. Much has been made about the team losing notable names and appearing to be on the downward trend after a tough 2024 campaign.

One of the areas that's seen some big change has come at wide receiver, with the biggest news of course being the trade of Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders.

It was a move that had been coming for a while, it seemed; the trade in general. Samuel's time was up in San Francisco and everybody knew it. From here on out, it would be all about Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and second-year pro Ricky Pearsall.

The emergence of Jennings, last season, made the Deebo departure easier to swallow. But, this team is going to need more from he and Pearsall in 2025. San Francisco also signed Demarcus Robinson who has been an underrated wideout for a few years now, but isn't anything more than a WR3.

Among free agents still available is former Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs. And, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently speculated over his future.

Would signing Stefon Diggs make sense for the 49ers?

"The best place for him, it seems, would be with a contender where he wouldn’t have to be the guy, which would mitigate potential issues with his desire for the ball and also alleviate the frustration that losing can bring a guy with his sort of makeup," Breer wrote.

The NFL insider would go on to add a pair of teams who make sense for Diggs.

"Is that place out there for him? San Francisco would make sense, at the right price," he noted.

Breer also mentioned the Dallas Cowboys as a possible suitor.

Diggs is coming off a torn ACL suffered in October, so he will likely remain a free agent for a while. Being ready right around training camp could be in the cards for him, though, and by that point, he'd be a perfect addition for San Francisco.

Adding a healthy Diggs could be exactly what this team needs. If he's willing to accept a lesser role like he did in Houston, Diggs would add another element to this offense and potentially instill some added hope into the fan base.

This is a team that needs a bit of a spark, and of course Diggs' addition wouldn't come for a while due to his recovery timeline, but giving the fans reason to believe this team will turn it around is crucial after many of the negative offseason narratives.
