NFL insider reiterates only reason Lions would have interest in Cooper Kupp

With that in mind, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler mentioned the Lions as a possible suitor for Kupp on television twice within the span of the day on Tuesday. It was within the scope of surprise potential suitors for Kupp, but the specific mentions from a reporter as plugged in as Fowler is are still notable.

"One league executive brought up Detroit to me because of the connection with Jared Goff", Fowler said. "They came into the league together and made Pro Bowls together. That's the type of instant connection together that could be fun."

The biggest issues with the Lions, or any team, trading for Kupp are his age (31, he'll turn 32 in June), the money he's due this year and how injuries have cost him time and limited his production in three straight seasons. But he has shown he still has something left, and there have been persistent reports the Rams would be willing to eat some of the money he is due to facilitate a trade.

If a suitable trade can't be found, the Rams could also just cut Kupp and he'd be a free agent.

NFL insider reiterates core reason Lions would be interested in Cooper Kupp

Kupp being available had Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown daydreaming on his podcast this week about what the offense would look like with the Super Bowl LVI MVP added to it. There would seem to be some usage/alignment overlap between St. Brown and Kupp, but both are also more than merely slot receivers.

In a roundup of buzz from Super Bowl week with Dan Graziano, Fowler naturally addressed which teams who could make sense for Kupp. Four teams are noted in short summaries, including the Lions.

"Kupp would have instant chemistry with Jared Goff if the Lions were willing to make a move."

"If the Lions were willing to make a move." That's what the whole idea of the Lions trading for anyone this offseason comes down to. In regard to Kupp, it should take more than "instant chemistry with Jared Goff" to foster serious interest.
