NFL Makes Final Decision on Punishment for Controversial Houston Texans Incident

The Houston Texans season came to an end in the divisional round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs, as they suffered a 23-14 defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. Things went wrong for Houston from the first play of the game, where a controversial incident yielded a significant fine for one of their players.

The Chiefs opened this game with a 63-yard kickoff return from Nikko Remigio. At the end of the return, Texans special teamer Kris Boyd forced Remigio to fumble to football, but it got quickly scooped up by Samaje Perine. After the play, Boyd took his helmet off and threw it while still on the field, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty.

Players know they can't take their helmets off while they are on the field, or else they will get penalized, but Boyd did it anyways, and it resulted in a controversial sideline confrontation with Houston's special teams coordinator Frank Ross. On Saturday, it was revealed that Boyd' actions earned him an $8,056 fine from the NFL.

"The NFL fined Texans CB Kris Boyd $8,056 for unsportsmanlike conduct — throwing his helmet after the opening kickoff, leading to a sideline confrontation with special teams coordinator Frank Ross in last week’s playoff loss at Kansas City," Tom Pelissero shared in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

While Boyd shoving his coach resulted in a lot of attention from fans, that's not what got him this fine from the NFL. The part that led up to it (Boyd taking his helmet off and throwing it while on the field) is what the league didn't like, and it saw him get hit with a pretty hefty fine.

As if losing wasn't bad enough for Boyd, he now has to pay off this fine from the league for his unsportsmanlike conduct in this game. This was a tough way for Boyd's season to end, and he will be looking to bounce back when he returns to the field in 2025.
