NFL writer urges Eagles to trade offensive weapon for all the wrong reasons

If there is one thing Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is good at, it's trading a player at the right time. Right now might not be the best time to trade tight end Dallas Goedert, but some may disagree with that assessment.

NFL writer urges Eagles to trade offensive weapon for all the wrong reasons

Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox recently wrote one player on each NFL team that should be put on the trade block during the preseason. Goedert was the guy for the Eagles as he feels there are other guys on the roster who could step up.

"Tight end Dallas Goedert played a fairly sizeable role during Philadelphia's run to Super Bowl LIV. While he missed time during the regular season, he recorded 215 yards and a touchdown during the playoffs.

Still, the Eagles pondered the idea of trading the 30-year-old early in the offseason. They received offers during the draft before the tight end agreed to a contract restructure, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer (h/t NFL Network's Mike Garafolo).

Philly should circle back and see what sort of offers it can get before the start of the regular season.

While Goedert can be a key piece of the offensive puzzle at times, the Eagles have other options at tight end. They added Kylen Granson and Harrison Bryant this offseason and saw flashes from Grant Calcaterra (298 yards, 1 TD) last year.

Goedert's restructure makes it easier for the Eagles to keep a surplus of tight ends in 2025, and trading him would only save $1.3 million in cap space. However, the impending 2026 free agent no longer appears to be a franchise centerpiece, and he's the tight end most likely to bring valuable draft capital back in a trade."

Losing Goedert at this point might jeopardize their Super Bowl chances

Not having Goedert on the field for 15 games over the last three years due to injury is and will continue to be a concern for Philadelphia. Even with the durability questions, when Goedert is on the field, he is one of Jalen Hurts' favorite targets.

Last year, Goedert averaged 11.8 yards per catch, which is the third highest of his career. He also caught 80.8% of his targets, a career-high for the eight-year veteran.

Calcaterra had some nice moments last year in Goedert's place and could be the eventual replacement for him if the Eagles don't bring Goedert back next year. The problem with Calcaterra is that he's not the home run hitter Goedert is at tight end, which might be an odd thing to say about the position.

Goedert is a solid route runner who can get open for Hurts when he needs him to. The good thing about Goedert as well is that he might have some of the best hands for a tight end in the NFL. He will catch most passes that come his way.

This Eagles offense is loaded in 2025, and Goedert is a big reason for that. It would be a shame to let him walk and lose that kind of production in the passing game when they need him the most.
