NFL’s Richest Defender Calls on Cowboys to Make Micah Parsons Decision

Myles Garrett is showing support for Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons amid his contract negotiations.

Myles Garrett thinks Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons deserves to be paid handsomely on his next deal.

Garrett is currently the highest-paid defender in the league after signing a four-year, $160 million extension earlier this offseason. It’s widely assumed that Parsons will surpass that number on his deal with the Cowboys. Garrett believes it’s well deserved.

“I think he deserves whatever he’s earned,” Garrett said, via Abby Jones of DLLS Sports. “Once I got the chance to train with him. I’ve seen his work ethic. I’ve seen how he attacks. The weights. Running. He’s 100% committed to his craft and getting better every day. He has that level of dedication to the game. He should get every penny he’s owed.”

Parsons and Garrett shared a video training session together in the offseason. The two are among the most dominant defenders in the league. Garrett has collected 102.5 sacks over eight seasons. Parsons is a near-perennial contender for Defensive Player of the Year and has 52.5 sacks over four seasons.

Micah Parsons Warned Cowboys About Elevating Cost

Parsons isn’t the only standout edge rusher eyeing a major payday. Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt and Cincinnati Bengals sack specialist Trey Hendrickson are also seeking lucrative extensions.

While the expectation is that the Cowboys will eventually get a deal done with Parsons before the season kicks off, negotiations have dragged on. Parsons has cautioned the team that the longer they wait, the higher the price tag could climb as other top defenders ink new deals around the league.

“It’s going to cost them more,” Parsons said.

New Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has praised Parsons this offseason and has made an effort to build a strong bond amid the contract talks.

“This relationship I’ve developed with Micah is very evident in the fact that anything I’ve asked him to do, he’s done,” Schottenheimer told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. “He’s been great.”

Dallas Waiting on Extensions With Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb

The Cowboys are trying to navigate the challenge of paying top dollar to three of their stars. Quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb secured major extensions prior to last season, deals that totaled a combined $376 million. But the Cowboys didn’t make it easy, dragging out negotiations that led to Lamb missing all of training camp and Prescott signing just before Week 1.

Parsons doesn’t want a similar scenario. The All-Pro pass rusher is focused on staying on the field, especially with the team looking to start strong under Schottenheimer. Parsons addressed his contract talks during minicamp, expressing optimism that a deal will get done.

“I’m pretty hopeful,” Parsons said. “I understand that it’s up to (Jones). He gives the green light on everything. Hopefully, something will be done by next month.”

Prescott also weighed in on Parsons’ situation, confident that a resolution is coming.

“We’re all very confident that Micah’s going to get this deal done,” Prescott said Thursday. “It starts with Micah and Jerry and I think they’ve both alluded to that. Obviously, it’s a situation and position that I’ve been in a couple of times. He understands the wait and just doing everything in between there the right way.”
