NHL Insider Reveals T.J. Oshie Expectation Before 'Special Announcement'

The Washington Capitals revealed that T.J. Oshie will make a “special announcement” at the Washington Harbour in Georgetown on Monday, June 9, at an event open to the public and scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

The announcement will come exactly seven years after the Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory celebration at the same location in 2018.

That championship marked the pinnacle of Oshie's 16-year NHL career, which spanned 1,010 regular-season games spent with the St. Louis Blues and the Capitals.

Oshie racked up 302 goals and 393 assists for 695 total points in the regular season, plus 69 points in 106 playoff games.

Though the team did not specify the nature of the event, Pioneer Press' Jess Myers reported that Oshie is expected to officially announce his retirement.

"Former @WarroadHShockey and @UNDmhockey star TJ Oshie, a 2018 Stanley Cup champion with the Capitals, is expected to announce his retirement on Monday in DC," Myers posted on X.

Oshie did not play in the 2024–25 season while placed on long-term injured reserve and completed his eight-year, $46 million contract at the end of the Capitals' postseason run that ended in May.

The forward had a chronic back issue that already limited him to just 52 games in 2023–24, in which he tallied 12 goals and 13 assists.

Oshie's retirement had long been anticipated, given his physical condition and expiring contract at the end of this year.

The 38-year-old still had one year remaining on an eight-year deal carrying a $5.75 million cap hit entering this campaign, and while he opted not to retire at the start of the season he made clear last year that he would only continue playing if he could find "an answer and a fix" to the back injuries.
