Nick Chubb has seen most of what the NFL has to offer at age 29, but the running back is a complete novice in one area.
Nick Chubb is a legend in the city of Cleveland. On his watch, the Cleveland Browns running back has helped deliver the team’s only two playoff appearances since 2003. However, as a running back, he has a higher injury chance and lower career expectancy.
At the age of 29, Chubb lives on the edge of a cliff. His production could hit a wall at any time. It already has resulted in the Browns taking the scenic route on delivering his next contract. If nothing happens, Chubb will be a free agent. If this happens, Joe Thomas’ claim of “redemption” earlier this season for Chubb would be wrong.
His advanced age has already led to him answering point-blank questions regarding how much longer Chubb will keep playing. Chubb said he aims to stick around and with an expiring contract, it is becoming clearer that he might need to find a new landing spot. It could come with any team like the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, or any other geographically located in-between.
Chubb could be entering free agency in a month unless something changes. He commented on how much he wanted to look elsewhere, noting one area of inexperience as well.
Nick Chubb on what he’s never done before
Speaking to Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal, the Browns running back said he would love to stick with the Browns. If he doesn’t, it would be the first time he has ever hit the free market. He admitted he has “no idea” how free agency works.
“Of course [I’d like to stay]. This is where I was drafted. This is where I’ve played the last seven years. … I’m not sure how it’ll work. This is the first time I’ve been a free agent, but I’d like to get it done sooner than later.”
So, Chubb has officially re-extended the olive branch to the Browns. However, at this late stage, the writing might be on the wall.
Good fits for Nick Chubb
While the Browns don’t appear to have much interest in bringing him back, teams could have interest in getting a back that tallied more than 1500 yards on the ground as recently as 2022.
The Los Angeles Chargers have proved that they can wring out plenty of production out of pieces that have been pushed aside elsewhere. The Ravens bid adieu to JK Dobbins, but the back logged nearly 1000 yards in his first year under Jim Harbaugh.
The Denver Broncos also might be in the hunt for a running back to add for insurance, should they not land one of the top guys in the NFL Draft. The team is in a precarious spot at 20th overall and could miss out on Ashton Jeanty if that is the back they desire.
