Look, I get it. Ben Johnson coaches the Chicago Bears now and there's a heavy amount of Detroit Lions fans that are a tad bit salty about it.
This has created a situation where Lions fans have found new ways to hate him because they could not possibly say he was bad at his job. These ways include him being distracted by interviewing during the playoffs, which he did last year. Things went fine, and the Lions put up 500 yards of offense and 31 points this year. Plus, he was not the only new head coach interviewed while his team was in the playoffs. Kellen Moore was interviewed while his team was in the Super Bowl.
The other thing is this creation that Johnson left the Lions in a bad way. That did not happen at all. He did not sneak out in the middle of the night. All the reports that he had his full coaching staff ready are being taken the wrong way, and they are proved wrong by the fact that the Bears took weeks to hire their staff, had interviews, and everything. Plus, the Lions have wished him well and had nothing but positive things to say about him.
The new one that crept up at the Combine is that Ben Johnson doesn't like Jared Goff, or that he's throwing shade at Goff. The same guy Johnson once said that he was an extension of and that was an extension of him.
It really starts with clips like this being taken out of context.
This is not a shot at Goff's mobility. He does not have mobility and we all know that. It's a very simple factual statement that Johnson has never really been with a mobile quarterback in the NFL. I don't know where the shade is. It's not like he said, "Jared can't be mobile and it ate me alive." He didn't even say Goff's name.
The other one is simply a joke that people are taking the wrong way.
I mean do you guys really think that Ben Johnson is saying that Penei Sewell is a better quarterback than Jared Goff? Because there is just no way he thinks that. They're joking about a play that didn't work in a game.
I know that this article won't change anything because Ben Johnson coaches for the Bears now and Lions fans hate the Bears. But he's not going around dogging Goff. It's just not happening.
On Tuesday at the NFL league meetings Johnson was asked about these comments and he said they were taken out of context.
“It was not a shot at Jared. I’ve talked to Jared about it. Sometimes your comments get skewed a little bit. That was not my intent. He certainly understands that. It was more directed toward Caleb and what he brings to the table."
There you go. It was all blown a bit out of proportion.
