After beating down the Los Angeles Chargers, the Houston Texans have an opportunity to be the team to stop a dynasty. Yes, the Kansas City Chiefs are a dynasty, as they are now going for their third Super Bowl in a row, and their fourth one in six years, while having been to another, but ultimately losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Every team in the league strives to be what the Chiefs currently are, just like they all used to strive to be what the New England Patriots used to be. So, the Texans could use some pointers from a team that has made winning look so much easier than it actually is.
But on Saturday, it's war. We can get to the pointers some other time. The Texans are still playing the role of the underdog, and the team that everyone has counted out. They did it with the Chargers, where some even said it was a bye week for Los Angeles. Now, of course, it will be the same here.
And what have the Texans done to be considered the favorites over the Chiefs in Kansas City? Nothing. This is where they are supposed to be. But if there is anyone outside of the organization who knew the Texans would be here, it's Patrick Mahomes, who called this long ago.
Patrick Mahomes knew he'd see Texans in the postseason
The Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs have a history of memorable matchups. Earlier this year, the Texans not only lost the game but also saw their player Tank Dell suffer a severe injury, and that's not really memorable for the right reasons. And, neither is their previous matchup in the postseason.
Back in 2019, during a playoff game, the Texans led by 20 points but ended up losing by the same margin, marking a tough day for their fans. They're now gearing up for a rematch of that 2019 game, scheduled for this Saturday at 3:30 PM CT.
But after that game a few weeks ago, Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, told C.J. Stroud after the game that he would see him in the playoffs. He knew that this team would be one that would make it to the next round. They would have to, because the Chiefs were the one seed, meaning they had a bye week the first round.
So, when you think about it, Mahomes knew that Houston would beat their matchup in the first round. And, that has to give you a bit of respect for one of the greatest to ever play.
