'Notable Dip' Sees Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Slide Down Player Rankings

The 2024 season for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is hard to get a proper read on.

'Notable Dip' Sees Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Slide Down Player Rankings

Yes, the Chiefs won 15 regular-season games, secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and made it to the Super Bowl, but the play of Mahomes wasn't exactly sparkling.

Still, he has enough credits in the bank that fans aren't completely going after him due to the Super Bowl loss, but his overall season efforts have seen him take quite the tumble in PFF's latest player rankings.

Out of 101 players, Mahomes, who is usually near the summit, came in at No. 39.

"After ranking in the top five of the PFF 101 in each of the previous two seasons, Mahomes saw a notable dip in production and impact during the 2024 campaign, leading to a slight slide," PFF writes. "However, he remains one of the best in the game at limiting mistakes—one of the most valuable traits a quarterback can have—ranking in the 82nd percentile in avoiding negative plays."

To be in the top 40 overall still isn't a bad achievement, but this is Patrick Mahomes, for most, the best quarterback in football.

But looking at his stats, it's easy to see why he slid down the list.

Mahomes posted his lowest passing yards total since 2017 (3,928), and the fewest touchdowns since 2017 (26), while having 11 interceptions (lowest in three years) and had an improved passer rating and QBR from last season (93.5 and 67.6).

When comparing that to other quarterbacks, Mahomes was seventh in passing yards, 10th in completion percentage, ninth in touchdowns, and passing yards per game.

So, middle of the pack for Patrick, and that was enough to see him slide from his lofty heights a season ago.

With the Super Bowl loss, we imagine he will be on a mission to bounce back in 2025.
