Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 will be the final season, but co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers hint that they'd like to do more after their Star Trek prequel ends. The highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 premieres July 17 on Paramount+ after a two-year wait. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is currently filming, while the final season is slated to start production later this year.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's world premiere was held at the Tribeca Film Festival. SlashFilm interviewed co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers on the red carpet. Regarding the announced end of Strange New Worlds and the future of the Star Trek franchise, Myers and Goldsman hinted that they want to make their version of Star Trek: The Original Series. Read their quotes below:
Henry Alonso Myers: I don't know. I know Alex [Kurtzman] is going to be doing 'Starfleet Academy.' But my focus is singular. I'm Strange New Worlds all the time. But would I like to get us right up to the edge of [The Original Series] and then have somebody call us and say, 'Now make that show!'"
Akiva Goldsman: We literally have a fantastic cast, and we have incredible sets, and we have all these things right there — it's a shame to waste it.
As reported by TrekMovie, after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 1, "Hegemony, Part II" was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, Akiva Goldsman elaborated on Strange New Worlds' "five-year mission." Goldsman hinted again about doing a new version of Star Trek: The Original Series with Strange New Worlds' cast and sets. Read Akiva's quote below:
Akiva Goldsman: We made a promise to ourselves that we would arc the show into [Star Trek: The Original Series]. And so we sort of thought, ‘Well, five year mission, okay, can we do five years?’ And we are really doing almost five—well, four and a little more than half. And we needed to be able to tell that story. Because right now [the characters] are in mid-stage development. How do they become who they are? What happens to some of them? Those are questions that we knew we needed to answer and promised to answer. And so that’s our five-year plan.
And then we run into TOS. But they’re not dying. And we have those sets…
Now that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' ending is known, co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers can plan out the final season and bring their Star Trek prequel about the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to a fitting conclusion. However, the natural endpoint that Myers and Goldsman said they had planned all along was to bring Strange New Worlds to the "edge" of Star Trek: The Original Series. At that point, Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) would take over the Enterprise from Captain Pike.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Star Trek franchise on Paramount+, Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers hinting at creating a new version of Star Trek: The Original Series seems like wishful thinking. Paramount Global's complicated sale to SkyDance Media has already affected the Star Trek franchise, and Strange New Worlds ending in season 5 seems to be a result of this transition. It's unclear whether Paramount, SkyDance, or even audiences will want a new version of Star Trek: The Original Series after Strange New Worlds ends.
