NY Jets are obvious 'frontrunners' after Davante Adams trade request

A NY Jets-Davante Adams trade has never felt more likely than it does now after the All-Pro wide receiver officially requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday.

Davante Adams

The Jets and Adams have seemingly been flirting around the idea of a potential trade since the team acquired Aaron Rodgers in the 2023 offseason. An Adams trade has felt inevitable for Jets fans for what seems like an eternity, with whispers and speculation swirling around the star wide receiver.

The Jets have maintained interest in Adams, inquiring about his availability at the trade deadline last season and this past offseason. Each time they were met with hesitancy from the Raiders.

Now, for the first time since the flirtations have begun, the Raiders are listening to offers. There is no team that makes more sense as a landing spot for Adams than the Jets.

NY Jets are the odds-on favorites to trade for Davante Adams

Various betting sites have listed the Jets as the odds-on favorites to land Adams. NFL insider James Palmer referred to the Jets as the clear "frontrunner" in the growing Adams market. It's easy to see why.

The connection between Aaron Rodgers and Adams is obvious, but it extends beyond that. This is a Jets team that's trying to compete for a Super Bowl this season. The Jets we've seen through four weeks don't appear to be at that level.

General manager Joe Douglas knows that his job is on the line this season. If the Jets fail to reach the postseason and fall short of expectations again, he won't be with the organization in a few months. That could result in the Jets being more aggressive than usual.

The finances won't be easy to work out, but NFL teams often find a way. Adams doesn't have any guaranteed money remaining on his contract after this season, which should make facilitating a trade easier.

The Raiders are reportedly starting their asking price at a second-round pick and additional compensation, although it seems unlikely any team would pay that at this point. The Jets might be forced to part ways with extra draft capital, however, if they want the Raiders to eat additional dead cap.

Other teams such as the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills make sense as landing spots, but none of them have Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback. And it's quite possible none of them are as desperate to win this season as the Jets.

The Jets have been trying to convince the Raiders to trade Davante Adams for the last 18+ months. Now, for the first time since their pursuit began, everyone involved is interested in making it a reality.
