Oh boy, conflicting reports surface on Chicago Cubs and 2027 MLB All-Star Game

On Thursday, fans on the North Side received a promising report that the Chicago Cubs were set to host their first All-Star game since 1990 at Wrigley Field. Bruce Levine with 670 The Score announced that he heard from sources that the Cubs were going to host the 2027 MLB All-Star Game.

In a clarification, Levine posted on X that the league was set to make the award public this summer.

“Clarifying the breaking news-The All Star game will be awarded to the Cubs sometime this summer,” Levine wrote. “MLB wants each city to have 2 years planning for the event.Home Run derby and FanFest etc. source told me Chicago (city) will get a windfall of $250 to $300 in revenue.”

That might not happen in 2027, as two other teams are in the running to host that year.

Chicago Cubs might not host the 2027 MLB All-Star Game

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cubs are the “favorite” to host in 2027, but the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles are ” in the mix” to host.

“The Chicago Cubs remain the favorite to host the 2027 All-Star Game, but MLB executives insist that no decision has been made,” Nightengale wrote in his weekly column published on Sunday morning. “The Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles are firmly in the mix, with all three teams expected to host the All-Star Game from 2027-2029.”

The bad news is that 2027 is not certain. The good news appears to be that Chicago is a lock to host the All-Star game in 2028 or 2029 if 2027 goes to Toronto or Baltimore.

Security concerns for the MLB

The city of Chicago last hosted the event in 2003 on the South Side. Security concerns had been one of the main issues that kept the MLB from returning the All-Star game to the city. Chicago plans to install $30 million worth of concrete bollards before the game.

The Cubs have hosted the All-Star game three times: 1947, 1962, and 1990. The Chicago White Sox have hosted the All-Star game four times: 1933, 1950, 1983, and 2003.

For now, the drought continues.

As we learned on Sunday, nothing is certain until the MLB announces its plan.
