Old crazy idea about Tom Brady signing with Vikings not so crazy anymore

Back in April, before the Minnesota Vikings lost rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy for the entire 2024 season, an idea about Tom Brady suiting up in purple and gold this year was shared by a notable national radio personality.

Shortly before the 2024 NFL Draft, Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd revealed some thoughts of his on his "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" show about Brady possibly signing with the Vikings in the middle of the upcoming season if Sam Darnold were to go down with an injury.

"Let's just say the Minnesota Vikings call [Tom Brady after] Sam Darnold [suffers a] slight injury, and whoever they draft at quarterback is not ready to play in that division with the Packers offense, the Bears with Caleb Williams, and the Vikings like their team, [they get] off to a 3-1 start. Look at what they would have [if they signed Brady].

Kevin O'Connell, the tall Sean McVay head coach, Brady, top-five running back Aaron Jones, best receiver probably in the league Justin Jefferson, an excellent [No. 2 WR] Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson [at] tight end, and maybe the best young tackle probably in the sport Christian Darrisaw. Seven elite people, including the head coach."

What are the chances of Tom Brady actually signing with the Minnesota Vikings?

While Cowherd made the possibility of Brady signing with Minnesota during the 2024 season intriguing, the chances of it becoming an actual reality still currently seem pretty low.

Maybe things would change if Darnold did indeed suffer an injury that forced him to miss multiple Vikings games in 2024. But for now, the focus for Minnesota seems to be on getting Darnold as prepared as possible to be the team's starting quarterback for the entire 2024 campaign.

There's also no guarantee that Brady would even want to come out of retirement to play for the Vikings, as he's about to begin a major opportunity in his post-playing career as part of the No. 1 announce team for FOX's weekly NFL coverage, and he's getting paid a hefty chunk of change to do it (10-year contract reportedly worth $375 million).

Would he be willing to leave that behind to play for the Vikings this season? No one ever thought they would ever see Brett Favre in a Minnesota uniform, so anything is certainly possible. But even after McCarthy's recent injury news, Brady signing with the Vikings still doesn't seem like it's something that has a good chance of actually happening.
