P.J. Locke’s Journey Through Adversity:
As the Denver Broncos prepare to kick off training camp later this month, safety P.J. Locke finds himself in a precarious position, teetering on the edge of the roster bubble. However, a recent personal revelation has injected a renewed sense of hope into his career trajectory. In a candid YouTube video titled “My Breakthrough,” Locke disclosed that he underwent neck fusion surgery following the team’s playoff defeat to the Buffalo Bills.
In his heartfelt message, Locke shared, “It’s been nothing short of a miracle… a blessing. I ain’t got no pain levels. Even like the little bit of pain I do have from certain movements, it ain’t nothing compared to what I was dealing with during the season.” This statement reflects a significant shift in his physical condition and mental outlook, suggesting that the surgery may have been a pivotal moment in his journey.
From Practice Squad to Starting Safety
Locke’s journey with the Broncos began in 2019 as a practice squad player. Over time, he emerged as a standout on special teams and eventually secured a starting position in the safety rotation. Despite his progress, Locke faced challenges last season, particularly in coverage, which contributed to the Broncos’ decision to bolster their secondary by signing Talanoa Hufanga in free agency. With Hufanga and Brandon Jones expected to lead the safety corps this season, Locke’s role may shift back to that of a reserve safety, where he could also contribute on special teams.
