Davante Adams became a superstar with the Packers. Largely, his growth as a wide receiver had to do with his connection with Aaron Rodgers, but let's not forget that Green Bay selected him in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State and were also patient with him as he struggled with drops early in his career.
Outside of the Packers perhaps not paying Adams as much as he wanted before they traded him to the Las Vegas Raiders, there's been no bad blood between his side and Green Bay's front office.
It's just been business — to the point that Adams has already dropped hints that he wouldn't mind a reunion with the organization that made him a household name.
The problem for Green Bay? The Packers now have a lot of competition for their former wideout. On Tuesday, the Jets released Adams, which was always going to be the plan considering the $35.6 million in non-guaranteed salary they were going to owe him for 2025.
The Jets now escape their Rodgers era by moving on from both WR and QB while saving $29.9 million in cap money for 2025.
And as far as the Packers are concerned? Now that Adams is officially a free agent, he is free to negotiate with any team.
The Packers have a need at wide receiver with Christian Watson expected to miss much of 2025, and Adams does have some experience playing with Jordan Love. That could be a huge bonus for the young quarterback, who undoubtedly needs a top playmaker next season.
The big issue for Green Bay is the open market, though. Adams may not be truly who he once was, but he's still coming off a season that saw him catch 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games played.
Just about every wideout-hungry team is going to be calling Adams' representation now that he's free, and let's not rule out him following Rodgers wherever he goes — if the 41-year-old quarterback does decide to play again in 2025.
Still, for those hoping for an Adams-Packers reunion, we are absolutely one step closer to that.
