The Green Bay Packers are expected to start backup quarterback Malik Willis for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Willis will receive the nod under center after starter Jordan Love suffered an MCL strain in his left knee in the season opener. Although the Packers insisted throughout the week that the final call hasn’t been made, Love’s status has been downgraded from questionable to doubtful for Week 2.
Love got hurt in the closing moments of a 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. He was sandwiched between two Eagles’ defensive players while trying to extend the play and lead a potential game-winning drive.
Reports indicate that Love is set to miss several weeks while recovering. However, the Packers believe that his downtime won’t be more than three weeks, considering that they haven’t placed him on Injured Reserve.
Green Bay finds itself in a tough situation, considering that Willis hasn’t shown much since being selected in the third round of the 2022 draft. He has played 12 games, including three starts, as a pro and completed 52.2% of his passes for 350 yards, zero touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The Packers will also have second-year QB Sean Clifford, who was elevated from the practice squad, at their disposal. Clifford played 13 snaps across two games in the NFL and completed one pass for 37 yards.
