Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst made it a priority to improve the team's wide receiver room this offseason and did just that.
The Packers selected Texas's Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, who became their only receiver taken in the first round since 2002. Green Bay additionally added TCU receiver Savion Williams in the third round.
However, these additions brought up the question of who gets left out of the receiver group and how the roles of those already established will change.
A recent report by ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter cleared up any possible rumors about former 2nd-round pick Jayden Reed and his role in the offense.
According to Schefter, "Packers GM Brian Gutekunst met last week with Jayden Reed’s agent Drew Rosenhaus to clarify the wide receiver’s status in Green Bay after the team drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. The team said it will not affect Reed’s status as its top receiver, per source."
Reed, who is entering his third season in the league, has led Green Bay in receptions and yards in each of his first two seasons.
Despite playing in 63% of offensive snaps last season, the Michigan State product accounted for 1,020 total yards and seven touchdowns. Reed had just one game with more than six targets and nine games with four or fewer targets.
Rosenhaus was likely worried about his client's role, considering the lack of targets last season and added competition at the position.
However, Gutekunst assured him that Reed will remain a vital part of Matt LaFleur's offense and continue to build his connection with Jordan Love.
A Packers receiver will still need to be moved ahead of the season. Romeo Doubs has been in rumors since the draft and may be who's left out the group ahead of September.
For now, Reed should still be looked at as the team's top receiver with an opportunity for an even bigger role with a potential veteran departure.
