Packers moving on from Josh Myers leaves them with tough Zach Tom decision

The Packers are reportedly moving on from Josh Myers.

The first Green Bay Packers free-agency domino has fallen.

According to Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber, the Packers don't plan to re-sign starting center Josh Myers. It's an unsurprising move.

While Myers rarely missed time and started 56 games across four seasons, he lacked the same consistency as his predecessor, Corey Linsley. In what could turn out to be a pricey free-agent center market, the Packers have smartly opted to pass.

It's the correct call, but it raises new questions for the Packers.

Along with needing wide receiver help and upgrades at defensive end and cornerback, the Packers also need a new starting center. Perhaps Elgton Jenkins can slide one position, with second-year Jordan Morgan taking his role at left guard. Maybe it's Sean Rhyan.

But what about Zach Tom?

Packers must determine Zach Tom's role after declining to re-sign Josh Myers in free agency

It feels a long shot that the Packers would move Tom from right tackle, where he has consistently performed at a Pro Bowl level. However, it's a good reminder of reports from last offseason that the Packers view Tom as a "Hall-of-Fame center."

"I was told by a couple of people within the organization, they think Zach Tom is a Pro Bowl right tackle, an All-Pro guard, and a potential Hall-of-Fame center. So there's your center," ESPN's Rob Demovsky told the Wilde & Tausch show in April 2024.

That was almost a year ago, and things may have changed. The Packers may prefer Tom at right tackle, considering how well he has played there and the importance of the position.

But if the Packers truly believe Tom has superstar potential as a center, they should consider it. Perhaps Tom would oppose a move — after all, he is entering a contract year and may prefer to remain at tackle.

It's Matt LaFleur's call. Tom would immediately fill the void at center, allowing the Packers to prioritize tackle this offseason. Second-year Jordan Morgan could compete for the right tackle job along with any additions they make in the offseason.

It seems unlikely. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Tom is an outstanding right tackle and will likely remain in that role. But with Myers likely gone, the Packers have to consider all options.
