MarShawn Lloyd may not be a household name — even in Wisconsin yet. But he’s confident that will change in 2025.
The reserve second-year running back spoke about what he can bring to to the Green Bay Packers after his injury-laden campaign in 2024.
Lloyd, a 2024 third-round draft pick from USC, took just six carries before he sustained an ankle injury, a hamstring injury then endured an appendectomy in his rookie year.
But Lloyd is ready to roll in 2025.
Lloyd may be behind Josh Jacobs on the Packers depth chart, but he feels ready to contribute while also feeling gratitude to be healthy.
“I feel like a little kid in a candy store,” Lloyd said. “It’s exciting … last year was a lot of watching and now it’s just being out there and being able to be tired or catch my breath. It’s a blessing.”
The 5-9, 220-pound back averaged 7.1 yards per carry and 17.8 yards per reception in 2023, his last season at USC. That could pay off for the Packers, especially with Lloyd ultra-motivated to contribute after his injury-plagued 2024 season.
“I’m very motivated,” Lloyd said. “I love this game, I love this team, (and) I think I can help bring an explosive ability.
“You’ve gotta focus on where your feet are. All gas, no brakes. That’s my mindset right now.”
Though he was not on the field, Lloyd spoke about the benefits of being in meetings and learning about the Packers offense last year and throughout the off-season.
“Even though I was hurt, I was in all the meetings, I was still at practice, still watching film, I was still in it mentally,” Lloyd said. “Everything is just a lot better and a lot easier to pick up on (after) being around it for a year.
“Now it’s just going out there and doing the physical.”
Lloyd is fired up to be a part of the Packers offense and is willing to do whatever it takes to
“If they want me to play O-lineman, I’ll play O-lineman,” Lloyd said. “I’m excited for whatever they have in store for me.”
Lloyd’s injury-laden 2024 season opened the door to competition for Green Bay’s No. 2 running back, even though Lloyd is likely to be Jacobs’ backup.
Jacobs is battling veterans Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson for the Packers’ backup running back spots. Though Lloyd has the inside track because the Packers drafted him, Brooks and Wilson both were contributors to the Packers last season.
Though Jacobs started every game, Wilson played in all 17 games and was second on the Packers in rushing attempts (102), yards (502) and touchdowns (4). He also garnered four touches in Green Bay’s lone playoff game, a 22-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Brooks is about to start his second season with the Packers after playing with the Miami Dolphins in 2023. But he had 36 carries for 182 rushing yards and one touchdown, each of which was third on the Packers.
If healthy, Lloyd is likely to cut into Brooks and Wilson’s carries, and those two are likely to be the ones fighting for a roster spot as Green Bay’s No. 3 RB.
