Packers safety Xavier McKinney named NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As October wraps up, the NFL officially unveiled its Player of the Month awards, and a Packers star was one of the recipients in the NFC.

Safety Xavier McKinney was named the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Month in October after recording 19 tackles, two interceptions, three pass defenses, one sack and a fumble recovery.

McKinney’s stardom has led the Packers’ defense as they’ve been among the best in the NFL, and he’s a large part of why the team went 4-0 in October.

McKinney started the month with his record-setting fifth interception of the season, becoming the only player since the NFL’s merger in 1970 to record an interception in his first five games with a new team.

He also matched the team record for most consecutive games with an interception, set by Irv Comp, which has stood for 81 years.

McKinney wrapped up his dominant October with a sixth interception this past Sunday against the Jaguars, furthering his league-leading pick total. Signing with the Packers in March, he’s the only defensive player on the roster who has played every single snap (511).

The last Packer to be named NFC Defensive Player of the Month was De’Vondre Campbell in October 2021. McKinney will look to start November hot as the Packers host the Lions at Lambeau Field for a huge rivalry game on Sunday at 3:25 p.m.
