Packers seem ready to move on from struggling rookie after a series of mistakes

The Green Bay Packers might still want to give kicker Brayden Narveson another chance . But if things don’t improve quickly, the team seems ready to move on from him. On Tuesday, according to ESPN’s NFL insider Field Yates, the Packers worked out two veteran kickers.

Kicker Chad Ryland turns things around for Patriots with game-winning field goal in lost season - What's Up Newp

They are Chad Ryland and Lucas Havrisik.

Former draft pick

Chad Ryland was a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2023. While the decision to take him so high was surprising for the Patriots, Ryland was seen as a good prospect — the second best of the class, behind Jake Moody, who was taken by the San Francisco 49ers in the third.

However, Ryland had a disastrous rookie season in Foxborough, converting only 64% of his field goals and only 7/14 from 40+ yards. At least he was relatively solid at extra points, converting 24 of 25.

In this year’s training camp, he lost a kicking battle to veteran Joey Slye and ended up cut by the Patriots.

Journeyman

Lucas Havrisik has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, and Cleveland Browns since he entered the league in 2022. But he only played nine games, all of them for the Rams last season.

His performance wasn’t great either. He converted 75% of his field goals, and only 4/9 from 40+ yards. He also missed three extra points in 22 attempts.

The Packers acquired Brayden Narveson via waivers from the Tennessee Titans after final roster cuts. So far, he has missed kicks in every game — including two, and a short 37-yarder, against the Minnesota Vikings.

The rookie converted 69.2% of his field goals — 3/6 from 40+. He is the only kicker in the NFL this season to miss a kick from less than 40 yards. However, Narveson did convert all of his nine extra point attempts.

Head coach Matt LaFleur indicated that he trusts Narveson and wants to keep him. But general manager Brian Gutekunst is doing his due diligence in case the rookie keeps making mistakes.

More workouts

The Packers also worked out quarterback Gavin Hardison and wide receiver Lideatrick Griffin. Throughout the season, it’s normal for teams to make these types of tests to keep their prospect database updated.

Gavin Hardison is a rookie quarterback out of UTEP. Undrafted, he spent his first training camp with the Miami Dolphins.

Lideatrick Griffin is a wide receiver and return specialist. A rookie as well, he played college football at Mississippi State and has already spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns in the NFL.
