Packers Urged to Reunite With Former $21 Million Playmaker to Replace Jaire Alexander

The decision by Green Bay to part ways with CB Jaire Alexander has one NFL writer urging the Packers to consider reuniting with one former starting cornerback ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

Packers Urged to Reunite with Rasul Douglas After Release of Jaire Alexander

Packers writer for Dairyland Express, Jovan Alford, recently urged Green Bay to reunite with CB Rasul Douglas after the release of Jaire Alexander earlier this week.

Alford wrote, “Therefore, the Packers should consider reuniting with former Green Bay cornerback Rasul Douglas, who is still sitting in free agency. The veteran cornerback has reportedly received some interest from a couple of teams, but it hasn’t led to a deal.”

Rasul Douglas was a reliable starter last year for a Buffalo Bills team that fell one game short of their first Super Bowl appearance in over 30 years.

How Good Was Rasul Douglas During His Time in Green Bay?

Douglas had a solid season in Buffalo last year (58 total tackles and five pass deflections), but it was his production during his time in Green Bay that has Alford believing the Packers should consider bringing him back in 2025.

Alford added, “In his first season with the Packers in 2021, Douglas produced 57 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, five interceptions (two returned for defensive touchdowns), a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble (12 games/9 starts). After an outstanding first year, the Packers signed Douglas to a three-year, $21 million deal in the following season. It was a tremendous gamble by Green Bay, which paid off, as the veteran cornerback had another solid season.”

Douglas was a focal part of a secondary that finished as a top 10 unit against opposing passing attacks in 2021, which led to a total of 36 games in Green Bay — where he finished with 174 total tackles, 10 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns — before he was traded to Buffalo.

Alford gave his thoughts on the trade by writing, “Entering his third year with Green Bay, Douglas would start in the first seven games of the 2023 campaign before he was surprisingly traded to the Buffalo Bills. The 6-foot-2 cornerback had 32 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception, and a fumble recovery in those games. However, Douglas gave up four receiving touchdowns and had a skyrocketing 109.0 pass rating allowed when targeted. It was a bold move by the Pack as Alexander was banged up, but they put their faith into Nixon, Carrington Valentine, and Corey Ballentine.”

Douglas may not be coming off of his best season as a pro and is quickly approaching 30 years old, but Alford still believes this is a move a team who has made back-to-back trips to the playoffs should seriously consider.

Alford concluded, “That said, the Packers should give Douglas a call as he’ll provide them additional veteran depth that they need to compete in the NFC North and make a deep run in the NFL playoffs.”

Douglas may not feel like a talent upgrade from Alexander, but one thing he has on his former teammate is availability. Alexander has played a total of 14 regular season games over the last two years while Douglas has been active for a minimum for 15 in three consecutive seasons.

At the very minimum, Douglas is a reliable veteran who can stabilize this young secondary in 2025.
