Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Is the 3rd Player in Franchise History with These Numbers

The Green Bay Packers have not had a number one wide receiver since Davante Adams forced a trade to the Las Vegas Raiders after the 2021 NFL season. Immediately following the trade, the Packers drafted three rookie wide receivers to help take his place: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure. In addition, they signed veteran Sammy Watkins in free agency.

Allen Lazard was supposed to be Green Bay’s top wide receiver in 2022, and in some ways, he was, leading the team with 60 receptions and 788 receiving yards. However, those numbers are a far cry from what any team would expect from their wide receiver one, especially if that player was a fifth-year veteran like Lazard.

The Packers still do not have a bonified number one wide receiver as they enter their third season without Adams. Instead, they arguably have as many as four.

The Green Bay Packers’ Wide Receivers Have Gotten High Praise This Offseason

In addition to Watson and Doubs, the Packers also boast Bo Melton, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks. Going into last season, many questioned whether or not the Packers would be able to succeed with such a young and inexperienced group.

Now, they are receiving comments of high praise. For example, Bucky Brooks recently added Reed to his 2024 All-Breakout Team, writing, “Operating primarily out of the slot, the second-year pro is a rare find as a vertical threat, possessing polished route-running skills that enable him to win on crossers, digs and deep overs.”

NFL legend Chad Johnson snapped back at a fan on social media who claimed the Packers had no proven wide receivers by posting: “Did you watch f—ing football last year, the Packers entire receiving corp is the s—, Watson, Doubs, Wicks & Melton are proven tf are you talking about.”

So much praise for all of their top-five wide receivers, yet no one can identify who the number one pass catcher is or will be.

As many fans know, Reed broke Green Bay’s franchise record for receptions by a rookie wide receiver, a record that was previously held by Sterling Sharpe. However, it is another wide receiver on the team who has put up numbers that have only been accomplished twice in franchise history.

Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Has Numbers Only Sterling Sharpe and James Lofton Achieved

In his first season with the Packers, Doubs had 42 receptions for 425 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games played (he missed four games with a sprained ankle. Last year, he had 59 receptions for 674 yards and eight touchdowns, which was tied with Reed for the team lead.

As Packers insider Mike Spofford pointed out in his most recent article, Doubs is just the third wide receiver in franchise history to have 100 receptions, 1,000 yards, and 10 touchdowns combined in his first two seasons. The other two were James Lofton (who is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame) and Sterling Sharpe (who should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame).

Here is an interesting look at how Doubs’ numbers through his first two seasons compare with theirs:

Romeo Doubs Sterling Sharpe James Lofton
Receptions 101 145 100
Receiving Yards 1,099 2,214 1,786
Receiving Touchdowns 11 13 10

When discussing who could be the Packers’ go-to wide receiver, Reed and Watson are often the most common picks. However, one should not just glance over Doubs. He’s quietly doing something special.
