Earlier this season, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs was suspended for one game due to conduct detrimental to the team. The third-year wideout failed to show up to practice for two days allegedly because he was unhappy with his role in the offense. But since his return, Doubs has been playing well. The former Nevada star seems to have returned to form and is back to being a key contributor to the Green Bay offense.
Packers WR Romeo Doubs Has Returned to Form: The First Two Seasons
The Packers selected Doubs in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was the second of three receivers the Pack selected that season along with Christian Watson and Samori Toure.
Doubs picked up the offense quickly and immediately started turning heads in training camp during his rookie campaign. In his first season with the team, Doubs caught 42 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns.
In 2023, Doubs built on his successful rookie campaign. When Jordan Love took over at quarterback, Doubs seemed to have the best chemistry with his new signal caller. Whenever Love needed a key third down pickup or to find a target in the red zone, he often looked for Doubs. He finished the season with 59 catches for 674 yards and tied for the team lead with eight touchdown catches.
The Start of 2024
The Packers entered the 2024 season with a young and deep receiving corps. Doubs was one of the team’s three starters along with Watson and Jayden Reed. The team was also looking to get Dontayvion Wicks more opportunities because of the promise he showed late last season.
It was Reed who enjoyed the most success in the early going. He established himself as the team’s most dangerous and consistent receiving weapon.
Doubs caught 12 passes in the first four games while none went for scores. For two games, Love was injured and unable to play. Malik Willis threw less frequently and does not have the same chemistry with Doubs that Love does.
The team suspended Doubs for the Rams game in Week 5. He spoke to head coach Matt LaFleur and was reinstated prior to the team’s Week 6 home game against Arizona.
Packers WR Romeo Doubs Has Returned to Form: Reinstated
The Packers continued to have receiver by committee even after Doubs returned to the team. He only caught three passes but still contributed to the team’s success. In the second quarter, he made an impressive 10-yard touchdown catch that put the Packers head 14-0. He also scored the Pack’s final touchdown of the day late in the third quarter on a 20-yard scoring play.
One week later, Doubs had his most productive game when he caught eight passes for 94 yards. He came out strong early against the Jaguars catching three passes for 72 yards. His productivity went down in the second half when Wilis replaced Love.
Moving Forward
Doubs, his teammates and the coaches all seem to be putting the suspension behind them. Doubs wished in hindsight he could have handled the situation better. But he added, “As far as just the organization, and just the staff, players, there’s nothing go on within that area. So, I just want to make myself clear there… great staff, great players, great support. It’s not as big as what they think it is. And I know, narratives are always created, and just hearing it from me, it wasn’t that big of a deal.”
LaFleur expressed confidence that the team and Doubs would move forward. “The one thing I’ll say about it is it’s a pretty isolated incident,” LaFleur said. “This has not happened with him before, and I don’t expect it to happen moving forward.”
Love explained, “We’re a family. We’re in this thing all together. Just staying together, keeping that brotherhood is definitely very important to us.”
Watson was also thrilled to have his fellow receiver back in the fold. “Just to have him out there and have him making plays, I think that was really exciting, and it’s going to be huge,” he said. “We need everybody so to have him out there was big time.”
Doubs has been productive since he returned. He has carved out a critical role despite the crowded and deep receiving room. Look for more from Doubs in the second half of the season.
