Patrick Mahomes predicts 'big impact plays' by Xavier Worthy this season

When receiver Xavier Worthy was selected No. 28 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs, it seemed like a perfect fit because of his elite speed, which is a prerequisite in their passing offense.

Mahomes predicts 'big impact plays' by Worthy this season

Worthy ran an NFL Combine record 4.21 forty-yard dash and showed off some of that dazzling acceleration in the Chiefs 24-23 preseason loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Worthy had three receptions for 62 yards with a 22-yard touchdown grab.

"I feel like I'm getting more comfortable with the game speed and adapting a little bit more to it. Worthy said. "I feel like I'm doing really good right now."

Worthy stands 5-foot-11 but weighs just 165 pounds and it remains to be seen if he can win against press-coverage in the pros. However, he was able to get open plenty at Texas last season while hauling in 75 receptions for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is pleased with Worthy's progress since joining the team and has confidence he'll contribute when his number is called on this season.

"There's high expectations on him," Mahomes said. "I think he's doing a great job in the process of building and building. I think he's going to make a lot of big impact plays for us."

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that once Worthy gets through coverage it makes multiple defenders cover him.

"Sometimes two people honor him," Reid said. "That's a big thing."

Mahomes echoed Reid's analysis. With the amount of attention that Worthy generates, other players are bound to be open if a defense devotes too much attention to him.

“Once you hit him over the top with that speed, it helps open up the whole entire football field," Mahomes said.

The Chiefs have the best quarterback in the league and now he has another dangerous weapon at his disposal. It wouldn't be shocking if Worthy's play becomes reminiscent of the days when Tyreek Hill wore a Chiefs uniform. Speed kills.
