Many consider Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to be the best player at his position, and possibly in the NFL.

So it should come as no surprise that one of his rookie cards sold for an exorbitantly high amount of money at a recent auction.

The 2017 Panini National Treasures card, which is one of only 10 that were made, features a piece of Mahomes’ jersey as well as his autograph and sold for $173,240, according to Goldin Auctions.

The card had a mint grade of 9 and the autograph was graded a 10 by Beckett, one of the top trading card grading companies in the country.

“Mahomes' No. 161 RPA is, quite simply, the most iconic NFL rookie card ever produced by Panini,” Goldin wrote in the auction description. “Every time a copy of this card reaches the market — especially in a low-mintage parallel, such as this elevated Holo Gold variety — it garners intense media attention, and the card has come to be emblematic of the modern, ultra-premium football card collecting hobby

Though Mahomes’ 2017 Panini National Treasures card sold for an absurd amount of cash, it’s not close to the most expensive NFL trading card ever sold, which also happens to be a Mahomes card.

His 2017 Panini National Treasures rookie card sold in 2021 for a record $4.3M. It was purchased by LJ’s Card Shop New Albany, Ohio. The only difference between it and the one that sold for $173K is it’s a rare one of-one that features a unique NFL patch whereas the latter featured a patch honoring late Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt.
