While Kansas City Chiefs quarterbackPatrick Mahomes prepares for the start of training camp next week, he remains invested in other sports and business ventures.
After his wife, Brittany Mahomes, became a founding co-owner of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current along with owners Chris and Angie Long, the 29-year-old quarterback joined as a co-owner in January 2023.
Little over four years since the KC Current played their first game during the 2021 season, they’ve become the second-most valuable franchise in the NWSL.
After opening CPKC Stadium, the first premier sports venue built primarily for a women’s sports team, Forbes reported that the KC Current generated a league-high $36 million in revenue in 2024.
The Current, despite being the fourth-smallest market team, has the second-highest valuation of $275 million, second to Angel City FC ($280 million), owned by Willow Bay and Bob Iger. While the Current garnered just $3 million in revenue in 2021, business boomed after they started playing at the new stadium.
The Longs, cofounders of Palmer Square Capital Management, “privately financed construction of the $140 million stadium,” Forbes reported.
Capitalizing on their success and building toward an even bigger future, the KC Current made another major expansion announcement on July 17.
The KC Current Announced Groundbreaking On A New $52 Million Riverside Stadium Performance Center
The KC Current announced on Thursday that they broke ground on a three-tiered expansion in Riverside, Missouri. “As the club continues to invest in the future of women’s soccer and the state of Missouri,” they are building Riverside Stadium, The Performance Center, and Pitch Expansion, totaling a $52 million investment.
Mahomes and his wife both shared the news on their Instagram Stories. The 2,000-seat Riverside Stadium will feature “a FIFA certified, heated grass pitch and gan amenities,” with an eye toward hosting a 2026 men’s World Cup base camp.
Long told ESPN, “We’ve hosted so many tours of countries and federations and it’s been really exciting for the team just to honestly get exposure to a lot of different people and approaches.”
The 35,000-square-foot state-of-the-art performance facility and four new youth soccer pitches will be built next to their current facility. The Longs are also building a hotel in the area that they plan to open before the 2026 World Cup.
“People love the fact that we have our front office space and our team location in a seamless fashion,” Long added. “A lot of places have their training facility and their front office is elsewhere. So, the ability to have everyone from XYZ country in the same spot.”
KC Current Is Reserving Part of the Land For a Future WNBA Training Facility
Long told ESPN that they reserved part of the land to build a facility for a future WNBA expansion team. “We think that will happen at some point,” Long said.
While the Longs and the Mahomes pitched the WNBA in October, they faced heavy competition to win a bid. The WNBA previously announced new expansion teams in Toronto, Canada, and Portland, Oregon, will join for the 2026 season. The league announced last month they passed on Kansas City, with new teams headed toward Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030.
Mahomes is passionate about bringing a WNBA team to the area. “You see how Kansas City has embraced all sports that have been in the city, especially women’s sports,” the three-time Super Bowl MVP told reporters on February 6. “I’ve seen it first hand with the Kansas City Current. I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night.
“That’s just the kind of atmosphere that we have in Kansas City. I’m hoping we can get that done and we can continue to push women’s sports forward.”
