The New England Patriots have more salary cap space than any other team in the NFL as free agency quickly approaches, and they are reportedly viewing one position as a priority.
The Patriots have just under $130M in cap space, according to the latest figures from Spotrac. They are the only team in the NFL with more than $100M to spend, which gives them tremendous flexibility.
Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported on Monday that the Patriots are expected to be "aggressive" when the NFL's legal tampering window begins on March 10. New England has prioritized acquiring a top wide receiver for Drake Maye.
Schultz notes that the Patriots have not ruled out a blockbuster trade, either.
Of course, we have heard that for the last few offseasons. The Patriots have been linked to a number of top free agents in recent years. They tried to sign Calvin Ridley a year ago, but Ridley instead chose the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brandon Aiyuk was another target in New England, but he wound up signing a big extension with the San Francisco 49ers.
This year should be a bit different. The Patriots have a promising young quarterback in Maye. They also have a proven head coach in Mike Vrabel. Those two factors could be enough to finally attract a top player at a position that has been a major issue for New England since Tom Brady's departure.
Tee Higgins was one wide receiver on the Patriots' radar, but the Cincinnati Bengals have decided to use the franchise tag on him. Vrabel and company may now turn their attention to another top veteran.
