The New England Patriots were busy Tuesday evening, as the team announced a flurry of roster moves finalized during the day. The team’s announcement read:
“The New England Patriots announced today the signing of RB JaMycal Hasty and rookie DT Bryce Ganious. Terms of the contracts were not announced. The Patriots also claimed CB Tre Avery off waivers from San Francisco.
In addition, the Patriots placed CB Marcellas Dial Jr. and DT Jaquelin Roy on injured reserve and released TE Tyler Davis.”
Tre Avery, like many others new head coach Mike Vrabel has brought to Foxboro, played for Vrabes back in the day. As an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers, Avery joined the Tennessee Titans defensive backfield in 2022.
He played for Vrabel in each of the coach’s last two seasons with the team, but when new leadership took over, Avery was out of a job. He was relegated to the Titans practice squad for a few months before ultimately being released in December.
He ended the season with the San Francisco 49ers and now will have a chance to once again get on coach Vrabel’s good side during training camp.
“Overall, he has played in 38 games with five starts and has 54 total tackles, 11 passes defensed and 11 special teams tackles,” the team’s announcement read.
JaMycal Hasty is a name Patriots fans will recognize. At 28-years-old, Hasty has an established career in the NFL. His first stop was in San Francisco in 2020 where he spent two seasons. He wound up on the Jacksonville Jaguars two years later where the running back posted career highs in carries, yards, and touchdowns.
The Pats signed him in 2023 and last year he appeared in 15 games, acting as both a kick returner and a gunner on other special teams units.
Bryce Ganious, conversely, is trying to earn his keep in this league. He enters a stacked defensive line room as a six-foot-even undrafted free agent. At 300 pounds, the 21-year-old played his college years at Villanova and Wake Forest and is now likely fighting for a spot on the practice squad in New England.
The team announced today that cornerback Marcellas Dial Jr. would miss the entire 2025-26 season with a torn ACL suffered at practice this week.
“Filed to ESPN: Patriots CB Marcellas Dial Jr., who was carted off the field Monday, tore his ACL, per league sources,” ESPN’s Mike Reiss posted on Bluesky.
Dial played in all 17 games as a rookie last season with the Patriots. The highlight of the season came in the overtime loss to the Titans when Dial forced a fumble on special teams.
In theory, placing Dial on injured reserve should hold his spot on the team throughout the year without costing the front office a roster spot. However, this is how a lot of bubble players career’s end.
“The Patriots selected the 24-year-old in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and he appeared in all 17 games last season, making one start,” writes NESN’s Victor Barbosa. “Dial posted 12 tackles and one forced fumble while playing just 60 defensive snaps but appeared on the field for 364 special teams snaps as well.”
