Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell made NFL history twice in Week 1

With the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense struggling to get much going in the Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons, kicker Chris Boswell came up big, making all six of his field goal attempts, which accounted for all of the Steelers points in the 18-10 win.

Three of Boswell's makes came from 50-plus yards, with the veteran kicker booting successful attempts from 57, 51 and 56 yards. His other three makes came from 44, 40 and 25 yards.

Boswell wasn't the only NFL kicker to make three 50-plus yard field goals in a game, as Houston Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn accomplished the same feat.

In the process, the two kickers set a pair of NFL records. Boswell and Fairbairn are the first two kickers in league history to make three 50-yard field goals in a season-opening game, and it was also the first time in NFL history that two kickers made three 50-yard field goals in a game in the same week, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Boswell also became the first kicker in Steelers history to make three 50-plus yard field goals in a single game, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Boswell did a little bit of everything in the kicking game in Week 1, as he was also called on to punt after punter Cameron Johnston went down with an injury in the fourth quarter. Boswell booted his lone attempt 43 yards.

Outside of a few rough seasons, Boswell has been the model of consistency over his nine campaigns with the Steelers. Entering the 2024 campaign, Boswell had the sixth-best success rate among kickers in NFL history at 87.17%.

His importance to this team was never more evident than it was on Sunday.
