Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell knows free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis quite well. The duo are best friends and own a training facility together in Florida.
If the Steelers are wondering about the type of player they could get in the wide receiver position who will come for a visit starting Wednesday, Gainwell is a resource of information.
“That’s like my brother,” Gainwell told Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. “I can’t wait to see him. I ain’t seen him in a minute since we’ve been at our gym, but I can’t wait to see him [Wednesday], but it’ll be amazing to be here.”
Davis was in attendance at Gainwell’s wedding this spring. He also helped Gainwell put on his youth camp in Yazoo, Mississippi. Despite never being teammates in college or the NFL, the pair are as close as can be.
Gainwell and Davis do everything together during the offseason, from training for the upcoming season to fishing. The facility has everything the players need, and in addition to Gainwell and Davis, other NFL players come down there to train.
In just ten games in 2024, Davis caught 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. That was enough for the Jaguars to cut him just one year into a three-year, $39 million deal.
Gainwell, however, says that is not the type of player Davis is, and he points to his time in Buffalo as the exact kind of player the Steelers would need.
“Everybody kinda knows what type of player he is,” Gainwell said. “We’ve seen him with Buffalo against Kansas City, four touchdowns in one game. The type of attitude he brings towards the game, and I’d say, man, he’s just a baller, he’s a player to the game just like I am, and he feeds off of energy, so the energy’s high, and he ready to ball, he sees the team winning — that’s the type of guy we need in the building.”
His 2024 was far better, amassing 746 yards in 17 games on 46 receptions. His career year came in 2023, when Davis posted 836 yards and seven touchdowns on 48 receptions.
He torched the Steelers as a downfield threat in the Buffalo Bills’ offense before with Josh Allen, including a 98-yard touchdown.
