Potential Lightning Top Target Signs PTO With Flames

This potential Tampa Bay Lightning target has signed a PTO with the Calgary Flames.

The Tampa Bay Lightning could use more defensive depth, specifically on the right side. One remaining free agent who has been viewed as a potential target for the Lightning is veteran defender Tyson Barrie.

Seravalli: Calgary Flames inviting Tyson Barrie to training camp on a professional try-out agreement

However, Barrie is another step closer to finding a new home elsewhere, as he has signed a professional tryout (PTO) agreement with the Calgary Flames.

Barrie could have been a solid PTO addition for the Lightning to take a look at during training camp. He would have provided them with another option to consider for their bottom pairing and power play.

The 2023-24 was a tough one for Barrie, as he fell down the Predators' depth chart and received several healthy scratches because of it. In addition, he requested a trade during the campaign but did not find a new home. In 41 games for the Predators on the season, he had one goal, 14 assists, and a minus-10 rating.

While it was a down year for Barrie, he has the potential to bounce back if he earns a contract for next season. Keep in mind, just back in 2022-23, he had 13 goals and 55 points in 85 games split between the Edmonton Oilers and Predators. Thus, he could have been a solid player for the Lightning to take a gamble on.

Alas, it will be intriguing to see if Barrie will end up securing a contract for the season with the Flames from here.
