Potential Pittsburgh Steelers trade target Jauan Jennings, a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, has not requested a trade, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Jennings has requested a new contract, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he is not opposed to a trade if the 49ers are unwilling to offer him a new deal. He reportedly wants around $15 million per year. This year, Jennings would make just $7.5 million.
Jennings, 28, had 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns last season, a career-high in all categories. Now, he is set to be the team’s WR2 heading into the year, as long as Brandon Aiyuk can recover in time for the start of the year. That makes him a vital piece for the 49ers.
A former seventh-round pick out of Tennessee, Jennings came along slowly and developed a niche role as a blocking wide receiver that would do the dirty work before expanding his role last year with injuries and uncertainty in the 49ers’ wide receiver room.
The likely cost for someone like Jennings would be an early day three pick, especially since the Steelers would have to give him a notable pay raise. Still, the 49ers do not seem to have any intentions of trading Jennings with Aiyuk’s knee injury and a litany of other questions around the wide receiver room.
