Proposed Lions signing adds former $120 million star EDGE as Aidan Hutchinson partner

We are almost through the first week of NFL free agency and the Detroit Lions have not addressed their biggest need, which comes along the edge.

2022 NFL Draft: Aidan Hutchinson a perfect fit for Dan Campbell's Lions - Sports Illustrated

Sure, the Lions did re-sign Marcus Davenport, but he's just a depth piece at this point considering he can't be relied upon due to his injury history, something the Lions saw first hand in 2024.

The Lions also parted ways with veteran edge rusher Za'Darius Smith after deciding that his contract wasn't something they wanted to pay this year. That leaves a huge void opposite Aidan Hutchinson.

To fix that issue, Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire thinks the Lions should kick the tires on former Buffalo Bills edge rusher Von Miller, who was on a six-year, $120 million contract before being cut by the team this offseason.

Von Miller to Lions?

"He's six years--and a devastating ankle injury--removed from being a Pro Bowler, but the 35-year-old can still threaten the quarterback in a part-time role," Risdon wrote. "Miller had six sacks in under 300 snaps for the Bills last year."

Miller appeared in 13 games last season and showed he's still got gas in the tank as he prepares to turn 36 this month. The seven-time All-Pro tallied six sacks and 32 total pressures in just 209 pass-rush snaps last season, per Pro Football Focus.

Miller isn't the elite edge rusher he once was, but he'd offer an adequate replacement for Smith and a bridge option for a Detroit squad that should be looking to add an EDGE in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Price will be important here, though. Miller is at risk of declining significantly at his age and the Lions shouldn't overpay to land him. Preferably, the Lions sign Miller to a one-year deal.

Based on the Joey Bosa contract with the Bills (one year, $12.6 million) we would guess that Miller will land a one-year contract in the range of $10-$13 million. The Lions can afford that and should seriously consider paying it with the franchise having Super Bowl aspirations once again in 2025.
