The Saints know that Moore is going to bring a very creative and ruthlessly efficient offense to New Orleans. After years of stagnation under Dennis Allen, Moore is the shot in the arm this franchise needs to reassert themselves atop the NFC South.
However, Moore is just 36 years old and doesn’t even have a full decade of NFL coaching under his belt. His success may ultimately be determined by the quality and experience of the staff he surrounds himself with during his debut season.
Even though the Saints finalized their hire very late in the process, they should have a good pool of candidates they can pull from to supplement Moore. The Saints could put together a dream staff if they lean on Moore’s connections within the league.
The perfect New Orleans Saints coaching staff for new head coach Kellen Moore
Offensive Coordinator: Doug Nussmeier
Nussmeier has been with Moore in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. His work with Jalen Hurts was exemplary and helped the Eagles dominate the Super Bowl. Moore may call the plays, but he’ll find a role for Nussmeier on this staff as a top offensive sounding board.
Defensive Coordinator: Brandon Staley
This one has been in the rumor mill plenty over the last few days, as Staley helped Moore land on his feet with the Chargers during his head coaching tenure. While the results lately have been mixed, Staley did lead a No. 1 defense once upon a time and brought a team to the playoffs as a head coach.
Assistant head coach: Jason Garrett
Garrett gave Moore his first coordinating job during his time in Dallas, but he’s been locked in the broadcast booth since his failed Giants OC stint. Garrett was able to raise Dallas’ floor despite front office chaos, and his experience could be invaluable for Moore as he gets his feet wet.
Senior Defensive Assistant: George Edwards
Edwards, who spent last season as the outside linebackers coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is another Cowboys connection with a history of being a high-end defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings. Having him in the fold could help form a dynamic 1-2 punch with Staley.
