The San Francisco 49ers agreed on Saturday evening to trade Pro Bowl wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round draft pick. The deal will not be finalized until the league year officially begins on March 12, but the two teams have agreed in principle.
While the 49ers dealing Samuel was not unexpected, the compensation and timing of the agreement were a bit shocking to some. Raiders starting cornerback Jack Jones weighed in on the trade via social media and had choice words for the deal.
"Deebo to the Commanders is crazy work," wrote Jones in a post on X.
Samuel was a First-Team All-Pro in 2021 but his production has taken a hit in recent seasons. He had a career-low in both receiving and rushing yards in 2024 and was owed nearly $17.6 million next season. The 49ers ultimately chose to take a lower draft pick in exchange for the Commanders paying Samuel's entire salary in 2025.
Jones, based on his post, seemed shocked by the news and felt that the trade was a bit absurd. Whether he felt that the 49ers did Samuel wrong in the negotiations or that the Commanders' roster was now extremely talented, Jones does not seem to agree with the deal.
