Rapoport: Steelers Seriously Targeting Tight End Kyle Pitts In Search For 'At Least One More Playmaker'

The Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced an eventful offseason, with a number of big roster moves. The team has added several key acquisitions to improve both sides of the ball, but they’ve also seen the departure of some well-known and impactful players. As a result, the roster has undergone major changes, leaving noticeable gaps in certain areas. These changes have naturally sparked widespread speculation from the media, with many questioning how the Steelers plan to address these holes and whether the current roster is built to compete at a high level in the upcoming season.

One of the largest gaps the Steelers' roster currently has lies in the receiving aspect, even though this isn’t limited strictly to the wide receiver position. While the team hasn’t made any official signings in recent days, that doesn’t mean the front office has been just sitting around. On the contrary, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport during a recent appearance on Good Morning Football, the Steelers have been actively working the phones in search of offensive playmakers. One notable call was reportedly made to the Atlanta Falcons regarding tight end Kyle Pitts, solidifying that Pittsburgh is seriously exploring all avenues to strengthen its receiving corps.

"Kyle Pitts, there was a phone call there. The Steelers are in the market it seems, for at least one more playmaker," Rapoport shared.

This doesn't come as too much of a surprise, as recent reports have indicated that the Steelers have also been making inquiries about Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith is known as a dynamic receiving threat at the tight end position, known for his impressive blend of size, speed, and athleticism. While the Steelers may not be in urgent need of adding another traditional tight end to their roster, what they do need is another reliable pass-catching weapon, something both Pitts and Smith has consistently proven he can provide, proving that the Steelers have a certain type of receiving threat they are looking at.

Pitts is widely considered one of the most talented receiving tight ends in the NFL. He brings a rare combination of size, athleticism, and refined route-running ability that mirrors that of a high-level wide receiver. His versatility is a major asset, allowing him to line up in various spots across the field, in-line, in the slot, or even out wide, creating constant mismatches for opposing defenses. Although his role in Atlanta’s offense has been somewhat inconsistent, Pitts’ talent is unmistakable. In a system that utilizes his full potential, like the Steelers, he has the ability to emerge as a true centerpiece in the passing game and a game-changing weapon for any quarterback.

The Steelers have faced significant scrutiny over their quarterback situation throughout the offseason. However, with the recent confirmation that veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be leading the offense this season, the team can now shift its focus to finding receivers who not only complement Rodgers’ style of play but also fit well within the long-term vision of the offense. While Rodgers brings experience and leadership, he is not the long-term solution. As a result, the Steelers must continue to build a roster that supports future development, identifying playmakers who can contribute immediately while also serving as key pieces for the years ahead.

Steelers Have Offseason Programs To Develop Team Chemistry

Chemistry between a quarterback and his receivers is absolutely critical to the success of any offense. In the Steelers' case, the prolonged uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ decision naturally raised concerns about how much time he would have to build that essential connection with his new teammates. Timing, trust, and familiarity all take time to develop, and the later a quarterback joins the team, the more challenging it can be to establish those things before the season begins. However, if the Steelers are still in the market for another receiver, it’s clear the receiving corps isn’t quite finalized. Fortunately, with offseason programs just getting underway, there is still plenty of time for Rodgers to begin building rapport with his current targets, and with any new additions the team may bring in.
